If You Are Told to Evacuate

In the interest of public safety, it is important residents understand the steps and necessary actions to take in the event of an emergency. The Ocean County Office of Emergency Management and the Township of Lakewood want our residents to follow an established list of procedures in order to ensure the safety of our citizens. In Ocean County, there are a number of reasons why you may have to evacuate. These include, but are not limited to:


NATURAL DISASTERS
  • Hurricane
  • Northeaster
  • Flood
  • Tornado
  • Blizzard/Winter Storm
  • Earthquake

TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTERS
  • Nuclear Facility Accident
  • Fire
  • Chemical Facility Accident
  • Power Outage
  • Transportation Accident
  • Act of Terrorism

WEATHER TERMS
  • If a weather storm WATCH is announced, it means that storm conditions are a real possibility and may threaten the county.
  • If a weather storm WARNING is announced, it means that storm conditions are expected to occur.

WHAT TO DO
When a weather WATCH has been announced, you should:
  • Organize your family and let friends and relatives know you may be evacuated
  • Make sure your car has enough gas to get you to a shelter, if necessary… remember you could be driving in very heavy traffic.
  • Check your flashlight and radio batteries
  • Refill prescriptions, if your supply is low
  • Make arrangements for the safety of your pet
  • Stay tuned to local Radio/TV stations

When a weather WARNING is announced you should:
  • Clear your yard of loose objects, bicycles, lawn ornaments/furniture, garbage cans, signs. etc.
  • Take down awnings
  • Prepare to evacuate as soon as you are asked to
  • Gather items to take to the shelter, in case you have to evacuate
  • Stay tuned to local Radio/TV stations

TRANSPORTATION
If you are in need of transportation or special help in order to evacuate, you should register with your municipal OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT now. Having this information ahead of time, will help us be better prepared. In an emergency, you can obtain evacuation assistance by calling: 732-367-8885.


TAKE WITH YOU
If you are evacuating to a public shelter, you should take the following with you:
  • Blanket/Sleeping Bag/Pillow
  • Lawn Chair/Light weight Lounge
  • Cash/Credit Cards/Checkbook
  • Expensive Jewelry
  • Change of Clothing
  • Family Documents/Photos/Birth Certificates
  • Insurance Documents
  • Stock Certificates, etc.
  • Medicine/Prescription Drugs
  • Infant Formula/Diapers/Foods
  • Special Dietary Foods
  • Flashlight

DO NOT BRING
to a public shelter:
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Extra Food
  • Guns or Other Weapons

ABOUT PETS AND LIVESTOCK
H.E.L.P. (HELP IN EMERGENCIES FOR LIVESTOCK AND PETS) is a volunteer organization dedicated to providing guidance and assistance with the evacuation of animals in Ocean County. Free Brochures are available through your office of Emergency Management.

Community Emergency Response Team - CERT
