Education

Lakewood Township has both public and private educational opportunities, ranging from early childhood programs to post graduate work. The public school system offers a pre-school program, an all-day kindergarten, an academically gifted program in the elementary schools, and a broad range of academic programs from Advanced Placement and Honors to vocational school, technology labs, and basic skills, all designed to meet the diverse needs of its students.

The award-winning Lakewood Community School provides vocational, academic, cultural, social, and recreational enrichment for all age groups from pre-school through senior citizens.

Lakewood also prides itself for having two institutions of higher learning. Beth Medrash Govoha is a world-famous school for rabbinical and Talmudic studies. What began in Lakewood, New Jersey 58 years ago with a handful of idealistic young scholars has evolved to an enrollment of more than 3,000 motivated students, making Beth Medrash Govoha the world’s largest center for education in the Talmud (the authoritative body of Jewish tradition), with affiliations to educational and communal institutions world-wide. Attracted by the quality education and the ethical values taught and manifested in its home community, the college’s enrollment is projected to reach 5,000 by 2008.

To accommodate this growth, the campus has expanded with the addition of Israel Henry Beren Hall - a new 52,000 square foot facility which opened in Fall 2001.

The fully accredited, licensed institution of higher learning is recognized by state and federal agencies. Its academic focus and communal responsibilities are continued by two grandsons of the founder who came to Lakewood with the dream and the determination to succeed.

Rabbi Aryeh Malkiel Kotler serves as Dean, and Rabbi Aaron Kotler as Chief Executive Officer. They head staffs of impeccable credentials and a single focus: Sustaining the partnership of college and township for the benefit of the entire New Jersey community - Beth Medrash Govoha’s continuing mission...then, now, and tomorrow.
